Here's how.

Just a month after dividing opinion with the all-electric Ferrari Luce, the Italian marque has answered one of enthusiasts' longest-running demands by putting a gear lever and clutch pedal back into one of its flagship models.

Sort of.

The new Ferrari 12Cilindri Manuale is the Italian brand's first factory-built three-pedal model since the California. Only three gated-manual Californias were made before the option was quietly dropped after the 2012 model year.

After 14 years of paddle-shift-only Ferraris, the manual has returned – albeit in a very different form.

The 12Cilindri Manuale is limited to 1499 examples worldwide and priced from €590,000 (~NZ$1.2 million) in Europe. That's around NZ$500,000 more than the standard 12Cilindri, which starts from just over $700,000 in New Zealand.

Rather than engineering a new H-pattern gearbox, Ferrari has created what it calls a 'Manuale By-Wire' system. It combines a traditional-looking gated gear lever and clutch pedal with the company's existing eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

The 619kW/678Nm naturally aspirated 6.5-litre V12 and gearbox are unchanged. Instead, Ferrari has focused on calibrating the electronic shifter and clutch to mimic the feel and operation of a conventional manual.

Unlike a conventional manual gearbox, there are no mechanical selector forks, selector rods or synchromesh connected directly to the gear lever. Likewise, the clutch pedal isn't physically linked to the clutch assembly.

Instead, both are electronic interfaces controlling software.

The gear lever and housing, machined from solid aluminium and steel, moves through a traditional gated six-speed pattern and uses a series of cams, springs, rollers and rotating drums to recreate the weight, resistance and tactile clicks of a manual box.

Ferrari says considerable effort even went into engineering the sounds the mechanism makes while shifting.

Internally, two Hall-effect angle sensors monitor the lever's position, converting every shift into an electronic command sent to the transmission control unit.

However, the biggest departure from tradition is arguably the clutch.

Rather than hydraulically operating a clutch release bearing, the pedal measures the driver's input using position sensors before sending a digital signal to the transmission control unit. Software then controls the dual-clutch gearbox's clutch packs.

Ferrari says the pedal reproduces the progressive resistance of a conventional clutch using its own arrangement of springs, cams, and rollers.

In other words, your left foot never directly controls the clutch – it simply tells the car how much clutch engagement you want.

So could you mis-shift – or worse, 'money shift' – a 12Cilindri Manuale?

According to Ferrari, no.

A push-pull solenoid physically locks the gear lever if the driver attempts a shift the transmission won't allow. For example, if the clutch pedal isn't depressed, the gear lever won't engage a new gear.

But Ferrari says incorrect pedal timing still has consequences.

Release the clutch too quickly and the system can deliberately produce jerky take-offs or even stall the engine, mimicking the behaviour of a conventional manual transmission.

Likewise, smooth shifts still depend on correctly managing the clutch, throttle and gear lever. Heel-and-toe downshifts are said to be supported.

However, because the transmission itself is unchanged, drivers can switch the Ferrari 12Cilindri Manuale into Auto mode if they tire of shifting themselves, allowing it to operate as a conventional eight-speed dual-clutch automatic.

That raises the inevitable question: is this actually a manual?

Purists will argue no. After all, the gear lever and clutch pedal aren't mechanically connected

But dismissing it outright also misses the point. Ferrari isn't claiming to have revived the traditional manual gearbox. Instead, it's trying to recreate the experience enthusiasts miss, while eliminating the drawbacks it says led to the manual's demise in the first place.

Whether that's enough to win over purists will ultimately come down to one thing: whether it feels like the real deal from behind the wheel.

2026 CarExpert Choice Awards: Best Affordable Mid-Size SUV

CarExpert

For many Kiwi families, the mid-size SUV is the ultimate ‘do everything’ vehicle. Light commercial registrations, however, slipped 7.1 per cent to 2964 units.

Electrified vehicles also posted their strongest result of the year. Battery-electric vehicles accounted for 20.4 per cent of all new vehicle registrations in June, while plug-in hybrids represented 10.4 per cent.

The Tesla Model Y was New Zealand's best-selling vehicle in June with 908 registrations, ahead of the Ford Ranger on 872 and the Toyota RAV4 on 821.

Within the passenger vehicle market, battery-electric and plug-in hybrid models made up 38 per cent of registrations – more than one in every three new passenger vehicles sold during the month.

Internal combustion engine vehicles still represented the largest share of the overall market at 45.1 per cent, though their share continues to decline as buyers increasingly turn to electrified alternatives.

Private buyers returned in greater numbers during June, accounting for 43.4 per cent of all registrations, while business buyers remained the largest customer group with a 49.6 per cent share.

Medium SUVs remained the country's most popular vehicle segment, recording 4292 registrations, followed by compact SUVs on 2787 units.

MIA chief executive Aimee Wiley said two clear trends had emerged during the first half of 2026.

"Firstly, the market has strengthened each month despite challenging economic conditions, led by passenger vehicles and supported by gains in light and heavy commercial segments.

"And secondly, plug in vehicles have continued to command a greater share of the market as the year progresses – against a backdrop of fuel supply concerns and increased model availability."

The MIA also noted battery-electric and plug-in hybrid registrations have accelerated since fuel prices began rising in March, with some June deliveries likely linked to purchase agreements signed during the recent fuel supply disruption.

Top selling models

Make and model

update for New Zealand users, introducing a new AI-powered Kiwi voice capable of correctly pronouncing te reo Māori place names.

The update is available from today and will be progressively released to users over the next two weeks, replacing the often incorrect pronunciations that have frustrated many Kiwis for years.

Google says the new Text-to-Speech (TTS) model speaks English with a New Zealand accent while accurately pronouncing Māori place names within the same sentence.

The technology was developed through a multi-year partnership between Google and Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori [the Māori Language Commission], with pronunciation rules guided by the commission and publicly available data from the New Zealand Geographic Board.

Google New Zealand country director Caroline Rainsford said advances in artificial intelligence, combined with local expertise, made the update possible.

"I'm incredibly excited for New Zealanders to experience this new local voice in Google Maps.

"Two things have been critical to the success of this update: advancements in AI have enabled our Text to Speech model to pronounce te reo Māori place names in an English sentence. And importantly, this would not have been possible without our years-long partnership and deep collaboration with Te Taura Whiri.

"We're so proud to be able to launch this voice in New Zealand because we know how important it is to pronounce our local place names correctly."

According to Google, the first phase focuses on cities and towns with Māori names, while support for more street and road names will be added over time. the McMurtry Spéirling PURE has been revealed as a candidate for the ultimate track weapon, with the British startup claiming its single-seat, track-only electric car (EV) delivers Formula 1-rivalling performance in a package designed to be far easier for owners to use.

After almost a decade of development, McMurtry says the customer-specification Spéirling PURE features 95 per cent new components compared with the prototypes that have broken records at the Goodwood Festival of Speed and Top Gear test track.

To put the McMurtry's performance into perspective, its 39.08-second Goodwood hillclimb record is 2.5 seconds quicker than the fastest time set by a Formula 1 car – driven by Nick Heidfeld – and more than eight seconds faster than the quickest road-legal car, the $9 million track-focused Koenigsegg Sadair's Spear.

Priced from £995,000 (~NZ$2.3 million) before taxes and options, the car's patented fan-assisted downforce system -which can generate up to 2000kg of downforce from a standstill – allows the rear-wheel drive EV to corner and brake at up to 3g.

Power comes from twin electric motors producing 1000bhp (746kW), supplied by a new 100kWh battery pack using Molicel cells. McMurtry claims a 0-60mph (0-97km/h) sprint time of just 1.55 seconds and a top speed of 305km/h.

Unlike the prototype, which used a 60kWh battery, the production car's larger battery is designed to increase running time while supporting faster charging and greater regenerative braking. McMurtry haven't confirmed driving range or DC fast-charging figures, but state the EV can travel 40-50km at LMP2 (Le Mans race car) pace.

McMurtry has also redesigned the chassis around the bigger battery pack, stretching the wheelbase by 200mm while increasing cabin space and improving visibility.

The carbon-fibre monocoque has also been engineered to meet global motorsport safety standards, while wider doors, repositioned pillars, integrated lighting, and improved service access are all intended to make the car easier to own and operate.

The fan system has also been updated with new motors, more durable blades, and an onboard air compressor that allows the underbody skirt system to operate without the external air bottle required by earlier prototypes.

The result, according to the company, is consistent downforce regardless of speed, unlike conventional aerodynamic systems that rely on airflow over wings and diffusers.

The system also gives the electric hypercar an unusual soundtrack, with its twin fans spinning at up to 23,000rpm and producing a jet engine-like noise despite the absence of an internal combustion engine.

Further mechanical changes include new Helix electric motors, upgraded gearing, revised cooling, hydraulic power-assisted steering replacing the previous electric system, wider Michelin slick tyres, and optional electronically adjustable dampers.

Inside, every Spéirling PURE receives a custom-moulded seat tailored to its owner, alongside a new multifunction steering wheel and central display showing battery status, fan settings, temperatures, and performance data.

McMurtry says a key focus for the production model has been reducing the complexity normally associated with extreme track cars.

Owners can reportedly operate the vehicle at track days with just one assistant, while DC fast charging allows the battery to recharge from 20 to 95 per cent in between 20 and 60 minutes depending on charger output.

An optional portable 100kWh battery pack is also available for charging at circuits without high-power infrastructure.

"The Spéirling PURE marks the beginning of a new era in track driving with mind-bending performance to suit all levels of owner, from weekend enthusiasts to professional drivers," said McMurtry co-founder and managing director Thomas Yates.

"In production form, the car is significantly more usable, but no less outrageous.

"In terms of exhilaration, grip, acceleration, sound, aesthetics and technology, we offer something that no other manufacturer is able to."

The Spéirling PURE will make its first public appearance in production form at the Goodwood Festival of Speed from July 9-12 before its North American debut at The Quail in California on August 14.

Production is underway at McMurtry's new factory in England's Cotswolds region, with first customer deliveries scheduled to begin later this year.

McMurtry's record-setting Goodwood run

McMurtry Spéirling PURE specs:

Acceleration

0-60mph in 1.55 seconds(with one foot roll out)

Cornering | Braking Forces

3g | 3g

Top Speed

190mph | 305kmh

Downforce

Up to 2000kg (4400lbs) from 0mph

Power

1000bhp

Length | Width | Height

3815mm (150.2”) | 1795mm (70.7”) | 1056mm (41.6”)

Wheelbase

2200mm (86.6”)

Run Distance

40-50km at LMP2 race car pace

Charge Time 20%-95%

20 mins - Mitsubishi, in which Nissan has a large minority share, is understood to be contributing to the cost of ECU development.

If this deal is signed within the next few weeks, the earliest we can expect to see jointly developed ECUs in production vehicles is 2029.

The second area under discussion is standardising in-car operating systems. Combined with the pending ECU deal, this should make it easier, and cheaper, for Honda and Nissan to develop software-defined vehicles with advanced infotainment systems and driver assistance technology.

Lastly, the two automakers are also discussing joint development and manufacturing for the North American market. This could see the two companies working together to develop larger models that are sold primarily in the US, Canada, Mexico and the Gulf States.

Although no models were named, large vehicles produced by the two companies include the Honda Passport, Pilot and Odyssey, as well as the Nissan Murano and Pathfinder.

An earlier report from Nikkei Asia indicated Nissan could also supply Honda and Mitsubishi with pickup trucks from its underutilised factory in Canton, Mississippi, which currently produces the Frontier.

Honda's only ute is the unibody Ridgeline, which is essentially a Pilot SUV with a bed pasted on the back. If the supply deal does go ahead it could spell the end of the Ridgeline, the second generation of which is already nine years old.

It would also be the first body-on-frame Honda since the original 1994 to 1997 Passport, which was just a rebadged Isuzu MU, a car which ended up in Australian showrooms as the Holden Frontera.

Should any of these deals get signed, they will be the first concrete collaborations between Honda and Nissan since the two companies officially ended merger talks in March 2025, just four months after announcing they would join forces, largely, to rescue from Nissan from its parlous financial position.

Since then Nissan has wallowed in red ink, installed a new CEO, and undertaken a dramatic restructuring that will see seven factories around the world close.

Honda has fared a little better, but this year announced its first-ever full-year loss after cancelling its ambitious EV rollout in North America just months before the first vehicles went into production.

Volkswagen ID. Polo is unlikely to make it to New Zealand, with Volkswagen NZ instead focusing its attention on the upcoming Volkswagen ID. Cross compact electric SUV.

While the battery-electric hatchback has now debuted in Europe as Volkswagen's answer to affordable urban EVs, Volkswagen New Zealand product manager Christopher Nunes says local buyers are far more likely to see the SUV alternative.

"We're looking at it [ID. Polo], yes, but it's less likely because it's a small hatchback," Mr Nunes told CarExpert.

"What we are looking at, and it will be more likely, is the ID. Cross, effectively an electric T-Roc.

"We're further down the line of making it (ID. Cross) happen, and if it's successful, we could see it next year."

Volkswagen currently offers four electric vehicles in New Zealand: the ID.4 GTX, ID.5 GTX, ID. Buzz, and ID. Buzz Cargo.

The decision also comes as Volkswagen prepares to reintroduce the petrol-powered Polo to New Zealand after a four-year absence.

Mr Nunes confirmed New Zealand will receive the facelifted Polo already on sale in Australia, rather than an all-new generation.

"Yes, we're picking up that facelift variant that's already been available for two or three years in Australia. So it's not an all-new model, it's a facelift."

He said the Polo still fills an important role in Volkswagen's local lineup.

"Polo is quite often the starter vehicle, and we're missing a genuine starter vehicle that families would buy for their kids learning how to drive.

"For someone that's gone, 'you know what? I'm downsizing', I just need something small, economical, does the job. Yep, Polo works. But we haven't had that for four years."

Initially, Volkswagen NZ expects to offer the Polo Life, powered by an 85kW 1.0-litre turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine, while it also hopes to secure the Polo GTI if production allows.

Volkswagen has yet to officially reveal the production version of the ID. Cross, though it previewed the model with the ID. Cross Concept at the 2025 Munich motor show.

"It's still very much behind the scenes. We haven't seen the official production car," Mr Nunes said.

"We saw the concept of the vehicle in person two years ago. It was a beautiful car."

The ID. Cross is expected to become part of Volkswagen's new generation of affordable electric vehicles, joining the ID. Polo and ID. Polo GTI on the updated MEB+ platform.

Unlike the hatchback-focused ID. Polo, the ID. Cross has been designed as a compact SUV roughly the size of a T-Roc, placing it in one of New Zealand's most popular vehicle segments.

The concept measures 4161mm long, 1839mm wide, and 1588mm tall, while its 2601mm wheelbase is similar to the European-market T-Cross.

Volkswagen has also prioritised practicality, with a claimed 450-litre boot, a 25-litre front trunk, and additional under-seat storage.

Power comes from a single front-mounted electric motor producing 155kW, with Volkswagen targeting a WLTP driving range of up to 420km.

Inside, the ID. Cross adopts the brand's latest design philosophy with an 11.0-inch digital instrument cluster, 13.0-inch touchscreen, physical shortcut controls, and natural voice control.

One unusual feature is 'Calm Status', which simplifies the cabin displays and changes the ambient lighting and sounds when a smartphone is placed face-down on the wireless phone charger.

Meanwhile, the newly launched ID. Polo is aimed squarely at European city car buyers.

Measuring 4053mm long, it offers up to 441 litres of boot space and is available with three front-wheel drive electric motor outputs ranging from 85kW to 155kW, paired with either a 37kWh or 52kWh battery.

The larger battery delivers a claimed WLTP driving range of up to 454km.

Despite its practicality and relatively affordable positioning in Europe, its compact hatchback body style appears less suited to New Zealand's current new-car market than the higher-riding ID. Cross.

Should Volkswagen New Zealand secure the ID. Cross, it would give the brand an electric alternative to the popular T-Roc when it arrives, potentially as early as 2027.

2026 CarExpert Choice Awards: Best Ute

CarExpert

No vehicle has become more ingrained in Kiwi life than the dual-cab ute. It remains one of the most accomplished vehicles in the segment, delivering excellent towing and payload credentials without sacrificing ride comfort, handling or interior quality.

Just as importantly, it feels as comfortable commuting through the city as it does tackling demanding jobs or venturing off-road, making it the complete package for Kiwi buyers.

Read our full Ford Ranger review here.

Finalist: Kia Tasman

Joining the shortlist as a finalist is the Kia Tasman.

The Tasman arrives as one of the newest challengers in the ute segment, bringing a fresh approach rather than following the established formula. Its more sophisticated interior design, polished driving experience and strong equipment levels make it an appealing choice for buyers wanting all the capability of a modern ute with an extra layer of comfort and refinement.

The ute segment has never been stronger, with buyers spoiled for choice across a range of capable models. Nor does it threaten organised car cruises or major car events, such as Beach Hop.

The Government says the new offence is narrowly targeted at groups of vehicles used to intimidate members of the public through dangerous or reckless driving.

The legislation, passed this week as part of the Antisocial Road Use Legislation Amendment Bill, introduces a new offence known as 'dangerous or reckless activity conducted in a frightening or intimidating convoy'.

The law defines a convoy as "a group of two or more motor vehicles intentionally travelling together".

However, that's only the first hurdle.

To commit the offence, a driver must engage in dangerous or reckless driving while travelling as part of the convoy.

On top of that, Police must establish the driver intended, knew, or was reckless as to whether their behaviour was likely to frighten or intimidate another person.

In other words, simply driving in a convoy or attending an organised cruise isn't enough to trigger the new offence.

The offence was created to target organised vehicle convoys that deliberately intimidate other motorists or communities, rather than ordinary groups travelling together.

Transport Minister Chris Bishop has repeatedly stressed the legislation isn't aimed at legitimate car clubs or enthusiasts.

"Importantly, the legislation includes safeguards to ensure penalties remain fair and proportionate, and does not target lawful car enthusiasts or legal motorsport events," Mr Bishop said following the Bill's passage.

Mr Bishop said the legislation was "tightly focused on illegal behaviour".

Instead, he said the legislation targets people who deliberately use their vehicles to intimidate others.

"Our message is simple: if you want to drive dangerously and intimidate communities, face the consequences."

The Government has grouped intimidating convoys alongside other forms of antisocial road use, including illegal street racing, burnouts, fleeing Police, disorderly dirt bike gatherings, and siren battles.

The Ministry of Transport says these activities can restrict the movement of other road users, create significant safety risks, and cause damage to public infrastructure and private property.

The Government says Police have reported these events becoming more organised and occurring more frequently around the country.

Police will also receive expanded powers to deal with antisocial road events, including the ability to temporarily close roads, public spaces, and carparks, direct people to leave an area, and issue infringement notices to those who refuse.

Law Society sought clearer wording

During the Bill's select committee process, the New Zealand Law Society argued the offence should more clearly require a driver to be intentionally participating in a convoy, warning the original drafting could potentially capture motorists who weren't knowingly travelling as part of one.

It warned the wording could potentially capture motorists who found themselves travelling with another vehicle without intentionally participating in a convoy.

The Law Society recommended changes to ensure the offence clearly applied only where drivers were intentionally travelling together.

The Law Society said the original wording of the Bill “appears to effectively enable the travel of one vehicle to form a 'convoy'” in their submission on the Bill.

"This may lead to the offence being applied in situations where a person was not intentionally or knowingly operating their vehicle as part of a convoy."

The final legislation retains the requirement that a convoy consists of two or more vehicles intentionally travelling together, alongside the separate requirement for dangerous or reckless behaviour intended to frighten or intimidate others.

What it means for motorists

For most New Zealand motorists – including those who attend organised car meets or cruises – very little changes.

The legislation doesn't prohibit groups of vehicles travelling together, nor does it ban organised cruises.

Instead, the offence targets groups of drivers who deliberately use dangerous or reckless driving to intimidate other road users or communities.

As Mr Bishop put it, the legislation is "tightly focused on illegal behaviour", rather than lawful enthusiasts enjoying their vehicles responsibly.

Lamborghini Urus SE Performante revealed as its fastest, most powerful SUV Lamborghini Urus SE Performante, a new flagship version of its plug-in hybrid Super SUV that combines more power, less weight, improved aerodynamics, and a new suspension system to become the fastest Urus ever built.

The new model sits above the existing Urus SE and becomes the halo of the Italian brand's SUV lineup, producing a combined 596kW of power and 1000Nm of torque from its twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 petrol engine and electric motor.

That's 146PS and 150Nm more than the previous Urus Performante, while extensive use of carbon fibre cuts 32kg from the vehicle's weight, though the SUV still tips the scales at 2,473 kg.

Lamborghini claims the Urus SE Performante can sprint from 0-100km/h in 3.3 seconds, reach 200km/h in 10.8 seconds, and continue to a top speed of 312km/h, making it the fastest Urus to date.

The plug-in hybrid system also allows more than 60km of electric-only driving from its 25.9kWh battery pack.

Lamborghini says the new flagship introduces several technologies not previously offered in the Urus lineup, including its AURA dual-chamber air suspension system.

The setup is claimed to reduce body roll by 55 per cent during 'spirited driving' while cutting cabin vibrations by 25 per cent compared with the previous Urus Performante.

A new six-degrees-of-freedom sensor, first seen on Lamborghini's Fenomeno concept, also works with an upgraded Integrated Power Brake system to improve braking, handling, and stability.

<img cent, with response times improving by 12 per cent. The company also claims the vehicle can stop from 200km/h in less than 130 metres.

Aerodynamics have also received significant attention. The Urus SE Performante features a new carbon-fibre bonnet with integrated S-Duct air channels, redesigned front and rear bumpers, enlarged cooling ducts, and dual rear spoilers.

Lamborghini says drag has been reduced by 3.0 per cent compared with the Urus SE while downforce has increased by 23 per cent.

The exterior receives the most extensive use of exposed carbon fibre ever seen on a Urus, including the bonnet, wheel arch extensions, side skirts, and rear diffuser.

New 23-inch alloy wheels and a larger rear diffuser further distinguish the Performante from the standard SE.

Inside, the SUV adopts a more driver-focused cabin with new upholstery featuring CorsaTex by Dinamica microfibre, unique Y-shaped styling elements, and contrasting red accents.

A revised 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen features updated graphics inspired by the Revuelto, while the steering wheel receives an exclusive carbon-fibre bezel.

The Urus SE Performante also introduces a new Rally drive mode alongside Strada, Sport, Corsa, and EV settings.

The Rally mode has been specifically tuned for loose-surface driving, while the hybrid system offers four Electric Performance Strategies, allowing drivers to prioritise electric driving, battery charging, efficiency, or maximum performance.

Lamborghini has also developed a new titanium Akrapovič exhaust system as standard equipment.

The lighter exhaust is claimed to save more than 10kg while delivering a louder, more distinctive soundtrack, with revised software tuning producing different exhaust characteristics depending on the selected drive mode.

Lamborghini has not yet announced New Zealand pricing or availability for the Urus SE Performante, though as the flagship model of the brand's best-seller, you can bet it will be available to Kiwi customers.

Forthing expands New Zealand dealer network with two new locations

Dave Kavermann

Forthing move to expand their dealer network in the North Island.

Chinese brand Forthing has expanded its New Zealand retail footprint just three months after launching locally, adding dealerships on Auckland's North Shore and in Tauranga.

From July 1, 2026, Winger Motors North Shore and Ebbetts Tauranga have joined the Forthing network, increasing the brand's authorised sales and service presence to six locations nationwide.

The additions follow Forthing's April launch, when it opened dealerships in Central Auckland, Hamilton, Lower Hutt, and Christchurch.

Forthing currently offers the Taikon mid-size SUV in New Zealand with a choice of Super Hybrid and battery-electric powertrains, available in two trim levels. Only three cars were confiscated and crushed between 2009 and 2017 under the previous law.

Transport Minister Chris Bishop said the tougher penalties were designed to better protect communities from dangerous anti-social driving.

"This law sends a very clear message: if you use our roads to intimidate or endanger communities, there will be serious consequences."

Under the legislation, vehicle owners who refuse to identify drivers involved in offences can also face vehicle forfeiture or destruction, along with court-ordered fines of up to $10,000.

Police will also receive expanded powers to close roads and public areas to manage illegal vehicle gatherings and issue infringements on the spot.

Meanwhile, the infringement fee for making excessive noise from or within a vehicle – including so-called siren battles – will increase from $50 to $300.

Police Minister Mark Mitchell said tougher consequences were needed.

"For too long, the consequences haven't matched the harm being caused.

"Our message is clear: if you choose to engage in this behaviour, expect serious and lasting consequences."

The Government has repeatedly said the legislation is aimed at illegal activity rather than legitimate car enthusiasts or organised motorsport events.

Standing in for Mr Bishop during the bill's final reading, Associate Transport Minister James Meager told Parliament the legislation was about restoring confidence in communities affected by anti-social driving.

"This bill does not target car enthusiasts or legal car meetings. It targets illegal, antisocial behaviour."

"This bill is about restoring order, restoring confidence, and restoring the basic right of people to feel safe in their own streets."

The legislation received support from Labour, although the party questioned whether Police have sufficient resources to enforce the new powers.

Labour transport spokesperson Tangi Utikere said Police needed stronger tools to deal with anti-social road use but noted previous car-crushing laws had seen only a handful of vehicles destroyed.

"One only needs to look back to the person who is colloquially known as Crusher Collins... and the inability to deliver a huge number of cars that were actually crushed," he said.

National MP Carl Bates embraced the comparison during debate, joking: "Crusher Carl, let's get this done."

The Green Party opposed the legislation, arguing existing laws were already reducing anti-social road behaviour and describing the bill as more of a public relations exercise than a meaningful safety measure.

Most provisions of the new law will come into effect in six months.

2026 Honda Super-One priced for New Zealand as quirky city EV lineup confirmed pricing and specifications for its all-new Honda Super-One, with the retro-inspired electric hatch due to arrive later this year.

The compact battery-electric hatchback will be offered in two variants, comprising the standard Super-One priced from $41,990, and the limited-run Super-One Kuro Edition priced from $44,990.

The production model follows the earlier reveal of the Super-N in Europe, with the New Zealand version adopting the Super-One name ahead of its local launch.

Designed primarily for urban driving, the Super-One measures just 3582mm long and rides on a 2520mm wheelbase, making it one of the smallest passenger EVs on sale in New Zealand.

Despite its compact dimensions, Honda says the cabin can accommodate four adults, while its trademark Magic Seats provide additional flexibility for carrying larger items.

Power comes from a front-mounted electric motor producing 70kW of power and 162Nm of torque, fed by a 29.6kWh battery pack.

Honda claims the Super-One can travel up to 253km on the NEDC cycle and supports DC fast charging up to 50 kW, allowing the battery to charge from 15 to 80 per cent in around 30 minutes.

<img width="800" simulated gear shifts, enhanced sound effects, and dynamic interior lighting to create a more engaging driving experience.

CITY mode also enables single-pedal driving, while steering wheel-mounted paddles allow drivers to adjust regenerative braking strength.

<img width="800" features a 9.0-inch infotainment touchscreen with built-in Google services, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 7.0-inch digital instrument cluster, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, Bose premium audio, and Honda Connect connected services.

Honda Connect includes remote climate control, digital key functionality, vehicle tracking, geofencing, remote locking and unlocking, and over-the-air vehicle monitoring through a three-year included subscription.

Honda's full Honda Sensing safety suite is standard, including adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, lane-keep assist, lane departure warning, traffic jam assist, front and rear parking sensors, and a reversing camera.

<img width="800" premium.

Inspired by the Japanese concept of kuro, meaning black, the special edition features a Crystal Black roof, black mirror caps, black tailgate trim, an upgraded rear spoiler, and exclusive two-tone exterior styling.

Unlike the standard model, which is available in Mono Grey, Crystal Black Pearl, and Boost Violet Pearl, the Kuro Edition is offered exclusively in Boost Violet Pearl with its contrasting black roof.

Honda says the Kuro Edition will be available in limited numbers.

<img width="800" bumpers are reused in exterior components, PET bottles are transformed into carpet fibres, factory uniforms become cabin insulation, and recycled tail-light lenses are used in new vehicles. Plant-based bio-resin is also used for selected interior trim pieces.

The Super-One also marks Honda's return to New Zealand's passenger EV market after the e:N1 SUV sold out, with the new city hatch expected to arrive in local showrooms during the second half of 2026.

Model

Price excluding on-road costs

Honda Super-One

$41,990

Honda Super-One Kuro Edition

$44,990

2026 Volkswagen T-Roc goes hybrid as all-new small SUV lands in New Zealand

Dave Kavermann

Volkswagen has launched the all-new second-generation T-Roc in New Zealand, introducing the brand's first mild-hybrid powertrain locally.

Volkswagen has launched the second-generation T-Roc in New Zealand, introducing the brand's first mild-hybrid powertrain locally while promising improved efficiency, a more refined drive, and modern styling to compete in the crowded compact SUV segment.

Positioned between the Golf hatchback and Tiguan SUV, Volkswagen is keen to remind us the new T-Roc is an all-new model rather than a facelift.

More than two million T-Rocs have been sold globally since the model debuted in 2017, while around 3000 examples have found homes in New Zealand since local sales began in 2018, when the SUV sold out shortly after launch.

Two variants are available at launch, comprising the T-Roc Life priced from $53,990 before on-road costs and the T-Roc R-Line Launch Edition from $65,490.

Volkswagen sees the Mazda CX-30, Kia Seltos, and Toyota C-HR as the T-Roc's key rivals in New Zealand's highly competitive compact SUV market.

The biggest mechanical change is the introduction of a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine paired with a 48V mild-hybrid system – the first such powertrain Volkswagen has offered in New Zealand.

Unlike a full hybrid, the mild-hybrid system can't drive the wheels using electric power alone. For decades, awards have helped buyers cut through the noise and identify the standout vehicles worth considering.

For us at CarExpert, our focus is on helping people make informed buying decisions through independent reviews, comparisons and expert advice. Yet one question continues to come up more than any other:

"What car should I buy?"

Whether it's a family SUV, an affordable hatchback, an electric vehicle or a ute, New Zealand buyers are faced with more options than ever before. The market has become increasingly competitive, with new brands arriving regularly and established manufacturers expanding their line-ups at a rapid pace.

For many buyers, spending weeks researching every option simply isn't realistic.

That's where the CarExpert Choice Awards come in.

Since our launch this year, the CarExpert NZ team has tested countless vehicles across New Zealand and around the world. We spend our days driving, reviewing, comparing and analysing the latest cars, while also keeping a close eye on ownership experiences, value for money, safety, technology and real-world usability.

The premise behind these awards is simple:

Which vehicles would we recommend to our friends and family?

To answer that question, the CarExpert team reviewed every eligible vehicle in each category, debated the merits of each contender, and ultimately selected a winner and a group of finalists based on the vehicles we believe represent the very best choices for Kiwi buyers.

You'll notice we haven't named an overall Car of the Year. That's deliberate.

Comparing a city hatchback with a seven-seat SUV, a dual-cab ute or a luxury electric vehicle isn't always meaningful. Instead, we've focused on recognising the vehicles that excel within the categories that matter most to New Zealand buyers.

Most importantly, these awards are entirely editorially driven.

No manufacturer can buy an award, influence the result or secure a place on the shortlist. The winners and finalists have been selected solely by CarExpert's team of expert journalists and reviewers.

The result is a list of vehicles we genuinely believe are the best in their respective categories today.

Whether you're actively shopping for a new vehicle or simply keeping an eye on the market, we hope that New Zealand’s inaugural CarExpert Choice Awards help make your next purchase a little easier.

After all, buying a new car is a big decision. Our job is to help you make it with confidence.

See the full list of Winners and Finalists here.

Volkswagen NZ set to bring back the Polo later this year

Matthew Hansen

Volkswagen's smallest car returns to NZ. The brand confirmed at today’s launch of the new T-Roc in Auckland that the Polo is set to return to the line-up this coming September.

According to Volkswagen New Zealand product manager, Christopher Nunes, the Polo that will land later this year will be the same as what is offered in Australia. It will only be offered in 3-cylinder form, with no GTI grade available. Full specifications and pricing will be detailed closer to the model's arrival.

The Polo nameplate's future in New Zealand is set to be an ongoing topic of intrigue, with fully electric ID.Polo models already on the market in other countries, and both a mild hybrid and a full hybrid in development.

Nunes said that there are no plans to bring the fully electric new ID.Polo into the country just yet. The model, in both its base trims and in GTI form, has yet to be confirmed for either side of the Tasman.

The new ID.Polo GTI essentially replaces the outgoing petrol-powered Polo GTI. The pure plug-in features a 166kW/290Nm electric motor, front-wheel drive, and a 52kWh battery pack. It’s capable of accelerating from a standstill to 100kph in 6.8 seconds (ironically exactly the same sprint time as its turbo petrol predecessor), and a range of 424km on the WLTP cycle.

The non-GTI ID.Polo, meanwhile, was unveiled in April. It is available overseas with two battery options (37kWh and 52kWh) and three motor options (85kW, 99kW, 155kW). Range peaks at 454km in the biggest battery variant.

It had been speculated initially that petrol propulsion would bow out from the Polo range globally, particularly in the face of increasingly stringent emissions regulations in Europe. But, Volkswagen confirmed late last year that it isn’t kicking the petrol Polo into touch just yet.

Speaking to UK outlet AutoExpress in December of last year, Volkswagen’s board member for sales, marketing and aftersales, Martin Sander, reiterated that a petrol engine will continue to be offered in the Polo for years to come.

“There will be an update to the combustion Polo. We can continue to build combustion-powered cars for as long as we need to, there is no limit. The existing [MQB-A0] platform is more than capable of that,” said Sander.

The petrol-fuelled Polo is reportedly gaining both a mild-hybrid and full hybrid powertrain option. The former will be derived from hardware already in the Golf and T-Roc, whilst the latter is expected to launch at a later time in Europe.

China’s oldest carmaker one step closer to NZ launch

Matthew Hansen

Hongqi may land in Australia as soon as this year, and NZ might be next.

In something of a surprise turn, China’s oldest car manufacturer — Hongqi — has confirmed that it plans to launch in Australia later this year, potentially opening the door for the luxury marque to cross the ditch to New Zealand.

In an article published by The Straits Times and republished on Hongqi’s Singapore website, the brand says it plans to launch in numerous new right-hand drive markets in the second half of 2026, naming Australia, the UK, and Malaysia.

The marque is on a right-hook market streak, having recently set itself up in Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, and Hong Kong.

Barring New Zealand’s close proximity to Australia as reason to believe a launch is imminent, there is also some interesting detail in the brand’s Australian business footprint.

As reported by CarExpert Australia, an Australian Business Number listing for a company called Greentech Smart EV Pty Ltd, active from August 2023, was also updated earlier this month to include a pair of business names it’ll operate under: HongQi Australia and — more notable for our market — HQ ANZ.

Hongqi was founded in 1958 by First Auto Works (FAW) as the first Chinese brand to produce passenger vehicle domestically.

It has always specialised in luxury vehicles, with the brand still producing cars for political parties in its homeland. However, Mr Galhotra described recalls as a "lagging indicator" and said the company expects them to decline as newer vehicles designed under its revised quality processes enter the market.

The admission is notable given Ford has been among the automakers aggressively rolling out AI across its manufacturing operations. Last year, the company said it had deployed around 900 AI-powered cameras across its factories to identify production defects and reduce supply disruptions.

Mr Farley has also previously predicted AI would replace many white-collar jobs, but Ford's latest experience suggests human expertise remains critical when it comes to building reliable vehicles.

NZ EV & Tech Expo to combine EV and plug-in hybrid show with test drives

Dave Kavermann

A new expo will put Kiwis in the driver seat of the latest EVs and PHEVs on sale in New Zealand.

New Zealand buyers considering an electric vehicle (EV) or plug-in hybrid (PHEV) will be able to compare models and take test drives at a new consumer expo launching in Auckland later this year.

The inaugural NZ EV & Tech Expo will run from November 13-15, 2026 at Auckland Showgrounds, bringing together vehicle manufacturers, charging technology providers and industry experts in a bid to simplify the buying process for prospective EV owners.

Organisers say visitors will be able to test drive vehicles onsite while also attending seminars covering topics including battery safety, financing, advanced driver assistance systems, charging infrastructure, and government support for EV adoption.

The event is targeting both private buyers and business fleet operators, with organisers expecting interest from companies looking to reduce operating costs and transition to lower-emissions vehicles.

Laurence Carey, managing director of Squid Group, said the expo aims to help buyers navigate what has become an increasingly crowded market.

"There's a lot of interest in EVs and plug-in hybrids, but for many people the market still feels crowded and confusing," said Mr Carey.

"This expo gives people the chance to compare the latest models in person and actually test drive a few vehicles before making the decision to buy.

"Every major electric and hybrid brand will be under one roof. The NZD has fallen about 6.0 per cent against the US dollar since late February, increasing the cost of importing refined fuel despite easing oil prices.

Mr Eckhold also noted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz remains well below pre-conflict levels, suggesting supply conditions haven't fully normalised.

Meanwhile, the Commerce Commission has warned fuel retailers it expects falling wholesale costs to be passed on to motorists as quickly as recent increases were.

Commerce Commission commissioner Bryan Chapple said the watchdog is closely monitoring fuel pricing behaviour and expects any reductions in wholesale fuel costs to be passed through to consumers.

"We expect to see decreases in global costs passed through to prices at the pump in the same way the increases have been," Mr Chapple said.

The watchdog said it will continue monitoring fuel prices weekly and has made it clear it expects lower import costs to be reflected at the pump now regional conditions have stabilised.

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon echoed the Commerce Commission's message and issued a clear message to fuel companies.

"We understand when prices go up, they need to raise them – but also when prices come down, they need to lower them too."

Finance Minister Nicola Willis echoed that sentiment, saying the Government expects any reduction in crude oil prices to eventually flow through to consumers.

"What we want to see is prices fall at the pump," Ms Willis said.

Brent crude oil, the international benchmark, is currently trading at around US$72 per barrel – still trading above pre-conflict levels, but well below the highs of US$126.41 reached during the height of tensions in the Middle East.

MORE: Government revises Fuel Response Plan, restrictions reserved for worst-case scenario

BYD ramps up NZ supply as EV, PHEV demand continues to outstrip stock

Dave Kavermann

BYD moves to secure more stock as strong demand continues for NZ's market leader in the PHEV and EV categories.

BYD says it has secured enough additional vehicle shipments to clear its current customer order backlog in New Zealand by the end of August, after unprecedented demand left some buyers facing delivery delays.

Earlier this month, BYD Auto New Zealand warned customers that supply constraints would delay some vehicle deliveries, following months of record demand across its expanding electric vehicle (EV), plug-in hybrid (PHEV), and ute lineups.

The importer has now confirmed three shipments carrying around 1250 vehicles will arrive during July, with vessels expected to dock around July 1, July 16, and July 20.

It has also secured additional shipping capacity for August, allowing it to fulfil all existing customer orders by the end of that month while significantly reducing wait times for new buyers.

"We appreciate the patience and understanding shown during this time and are pleased to provide a positive update," said BYD Auto New Zealand general manager, Warren Willmot.

"As a result, we expect to fulfil all current customer orders by the end of August. Looking ahead, these increased supply volumes will substantially reduce wait times for new orders.

"We remain committed to delivering vehicles to our customers as quickly as possible and thank them for their continued support."

The additional supply comes as BYD enjoys its strongest-ever start to a year in New Zealand.

According to Motor Industry Association registration data, BYD delivered 2079 passenger vehicles between January and May, an increase of 277 per cent over the same period in 2025. That places the Chinese brand fifth in the passenger vehicle market, ahead of Suzuki, Mazda, and Ford.

BYD has also become New Zealand's best-selling EV brand so far this year, registering 1253 battery-electric vehicles through May, up 220 per cent year-on-year.

Its strongest-performing EVs have been the BYD Atto 1, Atto 2, and Atto 3, helping it overtake more established rivals in the segment.

The brand also leads New Zealand's plug-in hybrid market, with 826 PHEV registrations year-to-date — a 413 per cent increase compared to the first five months of last year.

Driving much of that success is the BYD Sealion 5, which is New Zealand's best-selling plug-in hybrid vehicle in 2026 so far with 368 registrations.

BYD has also made significant gains in the light commercial market thanks to the BYD Shark 6 ute.

The plug-in hybrid dual-cab has recorded 638 registrations through May, placing BYD fifth in the commercial vehicle market and ahead of established brands including Isuzu, GWM, and Kia.

Supply has struggled to keep pace with demand throughout the year.

Following a record sales weekend earlier this year, BYD New Zealand announced it had fully allocated all in-country stock and incoming shipments to its dealer network, with some colours and model variants sold out for up to two months.

At the time, the company said customer demand had exceeded its most optimistic forecasts and pledged to increase shipment volumes to improve availability.

The latest announcement suggests those additional vehicles are now on the way.

The increase in New Zealand allocations follows a similar strategy in Australia, where BYD has begun using its own fleet of roll-on/roll-off vehicle carriers to improve supply.

Earlier this year, the BYD-owned BYD Zhengzhou delivered almost 5000 vehicles to Australian customers on its maiden voyage, highlighting the Chinese automaker's growing investment in global distribution as overseas demand continues to accelerate.

MORE: <a href="https://www.carexpert.co.nz/car-news/byd-targets-overtaking-toyota-as-worlds-biggest-carmaker-in-5-years" rel="noopener to CarExpert that its smallest and most affordable electric vehicle yet, the Raval, will arrive in New Zealand in 2027 as the brand expands its battery-electric lineup.

The new hatchback will slot beneath the Cupra Tavascan, which is currently priced from $84,900 before on-road costs, making it the brand's most accessible EV when it reaches local showrooms.

The Raval will effectively replace the Cupra Born, which was priced from $64,990, and was discontinued locally in mid-2025 after the brand sold out its final local allocation.

New Zealand's Raval range and pricing details won't be confirmed until late 2026, closer to the its local launch.

Unveiled in Europe earlier this year, the Cupra Raval is the first model under the Volkswagen Group's new entry-level MEB+ electric vehicle platform and has been designed as an urban-focused hatchback with a sporting edge.

At 4046mm long, the Raval is similar in size to a Volkswagen Polo, though its dedicated EV architecture allows it to offer a sizeable 441L boot.

Overseas, Cupra will offer the Raval with four electric motor outputs ranging from 85kW to 166kW, paired with either a 37kWh or 52kWh battery. Unlike the Born, all Raval models are now front-wheel drive.

The flagship 166kW VZ is fitted exclusively with the larger battery and features performance upgrades including an electronic limited-slip differential and adaptive suspension.

Maximum claimed driving range is up to 450km on the WLTP cycle, though this figure applies to the most efficient version in the European lineup. The VZ performance flagship offers around 400km of WLTP range.

Cupra also claims the 52kWh battery can be recharged from 10 to 80 per cent in as little as 23 minutes using a DC fast charger.

Despite its entry-level positioning, the Raval offers technology typically reserved for larger and more expensive models.

All versions feature a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.9-inch infotainment touchscreen running Volkswagen Group's latest Android-based software, with integrated YouTube, Spotify, and an app store.

Higher-spec variants add features including matrix LED headlights, a 12-speaker Sennheiser premium sound system, adaptive suspension, and ambient lighting with animated door panel illumination.

The Raval is designed, developed, and built in Barcelona, Spain, where it shares its production line with its closely related Volkswagen sibling.

While New Zealand buyers will need to wait until 2027, Cupra says local pricing, specifications, and range figures will be announced during the second half of 2026.

If it follows the European strategy, the Raval is expected to become the brand's lowest-priced electric vehicle.

Confirmation of the Raval's arrival comes after Cupra announced the Leon VZ hot hatch would return to New Zealand with a turbocharged 239kW four-cylinder engine.
