The updated Mercedes-Benz EQS has been revealed with a significant boost in capability, and is shaping as one of the most advanced luxury electric vehicles (EVs) expected to reach New Zealand.
Headlined by a WLTP driving range of up to 925km, the flagship Mercedes-Benz electric sedan looks to set a new benchmark for long-distance EV travel in the premium segment – and could become the first EV in New Zealand capable of more than 900km on a single charge.
There is only one other EV model currently expected to arrive in New Zealand with a range of over 900km, the BWW i3 sedan, which is due to arrive in early 2027.

Combined with ultra-fast charging capability of up to 350kW, the EQS can reportedly add up to 320km of range in around 10 minutes, provided suitable high-power chargers are available.
Even on older 400V charging infrastructure, Mercedes-Benz says the EQS can maintain strong charging performance thanks to its split-battery architecture. This should improve real-world usability in regions where next-generation charging networks are still rolling out.
The updated EQS will also introduce steer-by-wire – a first for any production German car – alongside the brand’s latest MB.OS software platform.

MB.OS effectively turns the EQS into a software-defined vehicle powered by artificial intelligence, enabling over-the-air updates, advanced navigation, and a more personalised in-car experience. However, the extent of these features in New Zealand will depend on local connectivity and digital service support.
Mercedes-Benz says ride comfort has also been enhanced, with the new EQS featuring updated 'AIRMATIC' air suspension. Vehicle-to-home capability is another highlight, allowing the EQS to potentially supply power to a household.
Inside, the EQS features rear-seat entertainment screens, advanced air filtration, and the brand’s expansive 'Hyperscreen' display.

Mercedes-Benz New Zealand is yet to confirm the local EQS range, with an announcement expected closer to the third quarter of 2026. However, with German pricing starting above €90,000 (approximately NZ$180,000), it’s expected to remain firmly in six-figure territory locally.
Mercedes-Benz currently doesn’t offer an electric sedan in New Zealand. A new-generation CLA four-door is due to arrive soon, while the EQA, EQB, and G-Class make up the brand’s existing battery-electric lineup.
While it will likely remain a niche offering, the EQS serves as a technology flagship for Mercedes-Benz, showcasing innovations that could eventually filter down to more accessible models in the brand’s New Zealand lineup.
