16 Toyota models, including RAV4, recalled over back-up issue

More than a dozen Toyota nameplates impacted by ECU recall notice.

Toyota New Zealand has issued a recall notice for a parking assist ECU issue that impacts 16 different nameplates, including the popular RAV4 and Corolla Cross

The recall notice specifically references that only selected “Japanese used import vehicles” built between 2021 and 2025 are affected.

The most notable and popular nameplates swept up in the notice are the Alphard, bZ4X, Corolla Cross, Land Cruiser, Noah, Prius, RAV4, Sienta, Vellfire, Voxy, Yaris, and Yaris Cross

The recall also impacts the luxury-focused Century, Crown and Harrier models, as well as the hydrogen-powered Mirai.

According to the notice, used import models featuring parking assist can have an issue displaying the reverse camera, “which may increase the risk of a crash with a person during a backing event”.

“The subject Japanese used import vehicles are equipped with a Parking Assist ECU, which is a component of the Panoramic View Monitor (PVM) system that displays the rearview image,” said the notice.

“The software in this ECU may cause (1) the rearview image to freeze briefly during the backing event if reverse is selected within a specific time after ignition is turned on; or (2) the rearview image not to display on the next ignition on if the ignition is turned on and off within a specific time.”

Toyota said that owners of affected vehicles “will be contacted by registered letter requesting you to contact your nearest authorised Toyota Store to arrange a convenient time to have the repairs completed at no cost.”

It is unknown how many vehicles are affected nationwide by the recall. CarExpert NZ has reached out to Toyota New Zealand for clarification.
