Why we've launched New Zealand’s inaugural CarExpert Choice Awards

From established brands to a wave of new entrants, Kiwi buyers have more choice than ever before, and while that's a good problem to have, it can also make choosing your next car surprisingly difficult.

That's why we're proud to launch the inaugural CarExpert Choice Awards in New Zealand.

The idea of a 'car of the year' award isn't new. For decades, awards have helped buyers cut through the noise and identify the standout vehicles worth considering.

For us at CarExpert, our focus is on helping people make informed buying decisions through independent reviews, comparisons and expert advice. Yet one question continues to come up more than any other:

"What car should I buy?"

Whether it's a family SUV, an affordable hatchback, an electric vehicle or a ute, New Zealand buyers are faced with more options than ever before. The market has become increasingly competitive, with new brands arriving regularly and established manufacturers expanding their line-ups at a rapid pace.

For many buyers, spending weeks researching every option simply isn't realistic.

That's where the CarExpert Choice Awards come in.

Since our launch this year, the CarExpert NZ team has tested countless vehicles across New Zealand and around the world. We spend our days driving, reviewing, comparing and analysing the latest cars, while also keeping a close eye on ownership experiences, value for money, safety, technology and real-world usability.

The premise behind these awards is simple:

Which vehicles would we recommend to our friends and family?

To answer that question, the CarExpert team reviewed every eligible vehicle in each category, debated the merits of each contender, and ultimately selected a winner and a group of finalists based on the vehicles we believe represent the very best choices for Kiwi buyers.

You'll notice we haven't named an overall Car of the Year. That's deliberate.

Comparing a city hatchback with a seven-seat SUV, a dual-cab ute or a luxury electric vehicle isn't always meaningful. Instead, we've focused on recognising the vehicles that excel within the categories that matter most to New Zealand buyers.

Most importantly, these awards are entirely editorially driven.

No manufacturer can buy an award, influence the result or secure a place on the shortlist. The winners and finalists have been selected solely by CarExpert's team of expert journalists and reviewers.

The result is a list of vehicles we genuinely believe are the best in their respective categories today.
