The Kia Picanto city hatch has quietly returned to Kia New Zealand’s passenger car lineup after previously disappearing from local showrooms early this year, though buyers now have just a single variant to choose from.

Listed on Kia New Zealand’s website and detailed in a recently released local brochure, the Picanto is now offered exclusively in sporty GT-Line trim, priced from $24,490 plus on-road costs, bringing a higher level of standard equipment than the entry-level variants previously sold here.

The Picanto’s return comes as the light-car segment continues to shrink, with several mainstream brands shifting their focus towards SUVs and electrified vehicles. The Picanto will compete directly with the Suzuki Swift, and new full electric rivals like the BYD Atto 1 and Dongfeng Box, all of which are priced from under $30,000 excluding on-road costs.

The smallest vehicle in Kia’s lineup continues to target urban buyers looking for an affordable and easy-to-park hatchback, at a time when many brands have exited the light-car segment altogether.

In fact, at 3595mm long, the Kia Picanto returns as one of the smallest new cars on sale in New Zealand. The three-door Suzuki Jimny is the only shorter vehicle available from local showrooms, measuring 3480mm long, though this increases to 3645mm when the rear-mounted spare wheel is included.

Power comes from a naturally aspirated 1.25-litre four-cylinder petrol engine producing 62kW of power and 122Nm of torque, paired with a four-speed automatic transmission driving the front wheels.

Kia claims fuel consumption of 6.7L/100km on the combined WLTP cycle.

Despite its compact dimensions – measuring 3595mm long, 1595mm wide, and 1495mm tall – Kia says the hatch offers seating for up to five occupants and between 255 and 1010 litres of luggage space with the rear seats raised and folded respectively.

The GT-Line grade brings a more aggressive appearance package featuring a unique body kit, rear spoiler, gloss black exterior accents, LED lighting, privacy glass, and 16-inch alloy wheels.

Inside, buyers receive composite leather trim, a leather-appointed D-cut sports steering wheel, aluminium pedals, an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a 4.2-inch digital instrument display, wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth connectivity, cruise control, and manual air-conditioning.

Although its a small hatchback, the Picanto also packs a comprehensive suite of active safety technology. Standard equipment includes autonomous emergency braking, lane-keep assist, lane-follow assist, blind-spot assist, high-beam assist, rear parking sensors, and a reversing camera.

The hatch is also fitted with six airbags, electronic stability control, hill-start assist, and ISOFIX child-seat anchorages.

Its reappearance gives Kiwi buyers one of the few remaining non-SUV options at the affordable end of the market.
