Audi will revive the A2 nameplate as the German carmaker looks set to dip into the affordable end of the electric vehicle (EV) market, confirming a new compact electric model – the A2 e-tron – will debut globally in late 2026.
Positioned as an entry point into the brand’s electric lineup, the A2 e-tron is expected be a small hatchback and play a key role in broadening Audi’s appeal. For now, Audi has only released a teaser sketch, showing a sleek silhouette that hints at a modern, city-focused design.
Announced at the company’s annual media conference, Audi CEO Gernot Döllner pitched the new model as a practical, everyday EV designed with real-world usability in mind.
“We’ve listened, customers want electric mobility that works in everyday life,” said Döllner.
“The A2 e-tron is efficient, compact, and confident – and it makes entering the Audi EV world more accessible than ever.”

The A2 badge was last used in the early 2000s on the original Audi A2 – a lightweight, aluminium-bodied hatch that developed a cult following for its efficiency and forward-thinking design.
While Audi New Zealand hasn’t confirmed the A2 e-tron for the local market, the new hatchback could play a key role for the brand on our shores. Compact EVs remain a growing segment here, especially as fuel prices fluctuate and Kiwis look for smaller, more efficient options.
Audi confirmed A2 e-Tron production will take place at the company’s Ingolstadt plant in Germany. Despite the global shift to electrification, Audi is keen to maintain its “made in Germany” credentials for key models.
Full details of the Audi A2 e-Tron – including range, performance, and technology – will be revealed closer to its global debut in late 2026.
