GWM ORA 5: New electric SUV model set for NZ from $36,990

GWM has announced the new ORA 5 for is coming to New Zealand, a model the company says will bring a larger and more capable offering to the brand’s lineup of electric vehicles (EVs).

Priced from $36,990 plus on-road costs for the entry-level Lux model and $39,990 plus on-road costs for the Ultra, the new small SUV is due in local showrooms from June, 2026.

The ORA 5 builds on the smaller ORA hatch with a larger footprint and improved practicality. Despite its increased size and upgraded technology, pricing has been kept in line with the outgoing ORA hatch.

It measures 4471mm long, 1833mm wide and 1641mm tall, with a 2720mm wheelbase – increases of 236mm, 8mm and 38mm respectively. Ground clearance is rated at 175mm.

Power comes from a front-mounted electric motor producing 150kW of power and 260Nm of torque, paired with a 58.3kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery. GWM claims a driving range of up to 430km on the WLTP cycle.

DC fast charging is supported at up to 120kW, enabling a 30 to 80 per cent recharge in around 20 minutes under optimal conditions. The SUV also features vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability, delivering up to 6kW of external power.

The ORA 5 evolves the brand’s retro-inspired design language with a more mature and aerodynamic look. Up front, it features water drop-style LED headlights and a closed-off grille, while a redesigned bumper adds larger air intakes.

Along the sides, new alloy wheel designs and smoother surfacing aim to improve aerodynamics, while the rear features a full-width light bar.

Inside, the ORA 5 introduces GWM’s latest Coffee OS infotainment system, centred around a 14.6-inch touchscreen.

The system supports voice control, over-the-air updates, and wireless smartphone connectivity, while the cabin features a minimalist layout with soft-touch materials. Boot space is rated at 362 litres.

Its size and pricing will position the new ORA 5 against fellow Chinese rivals like the BYD Atto 2, MG S5 EV, and Dongfeng Vigo.

The ORA 5 also signals the start of a broader expansion for GWM, with additional ORA EV models set to arrive in New Zealand through 2026 and 2027.

GWM says the new model will help it capitalise on tightening emissions regulations while supporting its ambition to become a top five brand in New Zealand.
