Hardened Toyota GRMN Corolla revealed, but it won't be sold in NZ

Toyota New Zealand will bring one of its most extreme performance models to local shores, with the GRMN Corolla set to appear as part of a global Gazoo Racing showcase that celebrates the brand’s motorsport DNA.

Two GRMN Corolla demonstration vehicles will visit New Zealand for a series of enthusiast-focused activations, giving local fans a rare opportunity to see the flagship hot hatch in person.

Sadly, Toyota New Zealand says the GRMN Corolla is not intended for local sale. Further details on where the two demonstration vehicles will appear in New Zealand will be confirmed closer to their arrival.

Sitting above the GR86 sports car and GR Yaris and GR Corolla hatchbacks, in the GR Performance lineup, the GRMN Corolla is the most track-focused version of the GR Corolla yet.

Developed through the brand's Super Taikyu endurance racing program and tested at Germany’s Nürburgring circuit, it takes the standard GR Corolla on sale here and pushes it further with upgrades designed to deliver extra track-day performance.

Compared with the GR Corolla sold in New Zealand, power remains at 224 kW, however torque increases from 400 Nm to 415 Nm, with Toyota targeting a stronger mid-range response between 3,600 rpm and 4,800 rpm to improve acceleration out of corners.

The GRMN Corolla also manual-only, featuring a close-ratio six-speed transmission and a revised GR-Four all-wheel drive system calibrated for greater rear torque flexibility and high-speed stability.

Weight has been reduced by around 30 kg through the deletion of the rear seats, creating a dedicated two-seat layout that prioritises performance.

Cooling performance has also been updated with a sub-radiator and intercooler spray system, designed to maintain consistent engine output under sustained load.

Toyota say chassis development has been heavily influenced by Nürburgring testing, where engineers fine-tuned suspension components to optimise balance and control over uneven surfaces.

The GRMN Corolla uses unique monotube shock absorbers with rebound springs, paired with wider 245/40ZR18 Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres that increase grip over the standard GR Corolla.

Steering and GR-Four calibration have also been revised to improve feedback and traction under cornering loads.

Aerodynamic performance has been significantly upgraded, including a carbon-fibre bonnet with integrated cooling ducting, carbon-fibre front fenders, front-side aerodynamic spoilers, fender vents, and a manually adjustable carbon-fibre rear wing.

The rear wing uses a five-stage adjustment system, with engineers testing multiple angles in one-degree increments during high-speed development runs to optimise stability and downforce balance.

Inside, the GRMN Corolla adopts a stripped-back, driver-focused cabin designed. The rear seats have been removed, while a bespoke full bucket driver’s seat inspired by Toyota’s Super Taikyu race programme provides enhanced lateral support and a lower seating position.

The cabin also features flocked trim surfaces to reduce glare, carbon-fibre interior detailing, and a GRMN serial number plate reinforcing its limited, specialist status.

Toyota say the model reflects the influence of Toyota Chairman Akio Toyoda, also known as “Morizo”, whose philosophy centres on building ever-better cars through competition.

Toyota New Zealand chief strategic officer Andrew Davis said bringing the GRMN Corolla to New Zealand reflects the company’s broader commitment to sharing the GR story and showcasing the latest Gazoo Racing performance models to local enthusiasts and communities.

“GR has always been about learning through driving and competition – and GRMN is the result of taking that philosophy to its extreme,” said Mr Davis.

"Kiwis are big performance car enthusiasts who are following the GR journey closely and like to customise their GR cars. 

“Because of this passion we now offer them a range of performance parts, and when we were given the opportunity to showcase a full factory GRMN car, we jumped at it.

"We are excited to see it hit our shores.”
