Leapmotor is preparing to expand its New Zealand lineup with the upcoming local reveal of its Leapmotor B05 hatchback this June, bringing a new rear-wheel-drive contender into one of the country’s fastest-growing electric vehicle segments.

Already unveiled globally and on sale in China badged as the Lafa 5, the B05 is a fully electric compact hatch designed to rival established models such as the MG4 EV and BYD Atto 1.

Measuring 4,430mm long with a 2,735mm wheelbase, the B05 is similar in size to established hatchback models like the Toyota Corolla hatch and Mazda 3

Built on the company's latest LEAP 3.5 architecture, the hatch pairs its rear-mounted motor with a claimed 50:50 weight distribution and multi-link rear suspension, signalling a stronger focus on driving dynamics than many similarly priced EVs.

Power outputs vary depending on specification. Entry-level versions are expected to produce around 132kW, while higher-grade models lift that figure to 160kW and 240Nm, enabling a 0-100km/h sprint in the mid-six-second range. A more performance-focused Ultra variant, revealed at the Beijing motor show, delivers up to 180kW and a claimed 0-100km/h time of 5.9 seconds.

Battery options are expected to range from around 52kWh to 67kWh, delivering an estimated WLTP driving range of between 360km and 430km depending on specification. Fast-charging capability is rated at up to approximately 150kW DC, enabling a 10 to 80 per cent top-up in around half an hour under ideal conditions, while AC charging is capped at 11kW.

Inside, the B05 adopts a minimalist, tech-focused cabin led by a 14.6-inch central touchscreen powered by Qualcomm hardware. Overseas models also feature a panoramic glass roof and a suite of advanced driver assistance systems, although final New Zealand specifications are yet to be confirmed.

Priced from €26,900 (~NZ$53,450) in Europe, the B05 is expected to priced more competitively in New Zealand and slot in as the entry-level model in the brand's lineup.

Leapmotor currently offers two models in New Zealand: the fully electric B10 SUV from $44,990 and the C10 SUV from $49,990. The latter is available in both battery-electric and range-extender hybrid forms.

The Leapmotor B05 will make its public New Zealand debut at Fieldays in Hamilton between June 10 and 12. Final specifications, pricing and availability are expected to be confirmed at the event.
