Mazda has announced the best-selling model in their current lineup has passed a major milestone as global production of the CX-5 reached five million units at the end of 2025.
The CX-5 mid-size SUV is the third Mazda model to surpass five million units, following the Mazda 323, produced from 1963 to 2003, and Mazda3 which replaced it in 2004.
Since its launch, the CX-5 has gone on to be Mazda’s most popular SUV and is now sold in more than 100 countries worldwide. Locally, the CX-5 was still Mazda’s best-selling vehicle in 2025 with 1610 units registered.
Production of the first-generation model began at Mazda’s Ujina Plant No. 2 in Hiroshima, Japan, before expanding to neighbouring Ujina Plant No.1, Hofu Plant, and facilities in China.

To meet demand, Mazda would also go on to produce CX-5s in Malaysia and Vietnam, helping the CX-5 to grow into Mazda’s best-selling model.
The milestone has been achieved just prior to the launch of an all-new CX-5 model, marking the first clean-sheet design in eight years. The all-new CX-5 was revealed in July, 2025 and is due to arrive in New Zealand later this year.
According to Mazda, the new model will deliver the sporty dynamics we’ve come to expect from the CX-5.
“The all-new CX-5 has been fully changed in eight years, and further refines its sporty design and driving dynamics,” said Koichiro Yamaguchi, Program Manager for the CX-5.
Yamaguchi says the new CX-5 will offer a more spacious cabin and has been designed with a meticulous focus on daily usability.

“We will continue to nurture the CX-5 carefully, aiming for it to be cherished for years to come,” said Koichiro Yamaguchi
Following its European launch next month, the all-new CX-5 will be released in North America and Japan in the first half of 2026, with New Zealand set to welcome the all-new CX-5 during the second half of the year.
David Hodge, Managing Director of Mazda Motors of New Zealand, says the CX-5s local popularity has echoed its global success.
“Since the first generation launched locally in 2012, the Mazda CX-5 has become a recognisable sight on New Zealand roads," said Hodge.
“With over 34,000 sales, the CX-5 has proven itself as a key companion to Mazda owners and their families, all across the country.
“We look forward to the arrival of the all-new CX-5 this year, a further development of what is the perfect vehicle for Kiwi lifestyles.”
