Audi has unveiled the fifth-generation Audi A6 allroad quattro, giving its long-running rugged wagon a more distinctive design, increased off-road capability, and - for the first time - a plug-in hybrid powertrain.

The new A6 allroad is set to go on sale in Europe from June 18, 2026, with pricing starting from €77,250 (~NZ$153,800) before local taxes and on-road costs.

Audi New Zealand have confirmed the model will make its way to New Zealand, penciled in for a Q1, 2027 launch, with final pricing and specifications be confirmed closer to the off-road model's arrival.

The new model builds on the recently revealed A6 Avant wagon (Audi-speak for wagon), but Audi says it has gone further than ever before to differentiate the allroad from its road-focused sibling.

Audi says the latest A6 allroad was designed to deliver genuine off-road capability while retaining the comfort and driving dynamics expected from a premium wagon.

The body is now 111mm wider than the standard A6 Avant, while ground clearance has increased by 34mm thanks to a standard adaptive air suspension system.

Standard adaptive air suspension provides 55mm of ride-height adjustment, while dedicated Offroad and Offroad+ modes can raise the vehicle a further 15mm. A lift function adds another 20mm of clearance at speeds below 35km/h. At higher speeds the suspension lowers automatically to improve stability and efficiency.

The new model also features optional all-wheel steering. At speeds below 60km/h, the rear wheels can turn by up to five degrees in the opposite direction to the fronts to improve manoeuvrability. At higher speeds they turn in the same direction, increasing stability during lane changes and cornering.

Audi says the wider stance, revised steering calibration, larger tyres, and all-wheel-drive system help ensure confident handling on both sealed and unsealed roads.

For the first time, Audi is offering the A6 allroad with a plug-in hybrid powertrain.

Badged e-hybrid, it combines a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor for total outputs of 270kW and 500Nm.

A 25.9kWh battery enables up to 95km of electric-only driving range under the WLTP testing standard, while AC charging at up to 11kW allows a full recharge in approximately two-and-a-half hours. Audi claims the e-hybrid can complete the 0-100km/h sprint in 5.5 seconds.

    Buyers can also choose a 3.0-litre turbo-diesel V6 featuring the brand’s latest 48V mild-hybrid technology.

This engine produces 220kW of power and 580Nm of torque, with an electric motor-generator capable of providing an additional 18kW when required. Audi claims fuel consumption of 5.8L/100km and a 0-100km/h time of 5.4 seconds. Both powertrains come standard with quattro all-wheel drive.

Inside, the A6 allroad mirrors the latest A6 Avant with a technology-focused cabin.

A curved display houses an 11.9-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.5-inch infotainment touchscreen, while a 10.9-inch passenger display is optional.

Audi has also integrated ChatGPT functionality into its voice assistant system, allowing more natural voice interactions.

Other available features include ventilated and massaging front seats, four-zone climate control, a panoramic glass roof, digital Matrix LED headlights, and second-generation OLED tail-lights.

Cargo capacity ranges from 466 litres to 1497 litres in diesel models, while the plug-in hybrid offers between 404 and 1423 litres due to its battery packaging.

Audi New Zealand currently offer the most extensive station wagon range locally, including the A6 and S6 Avant range and full electric A6 Avant e-tron. The three model lines will soon be joined by the high performance RS5 Avant and sedan, due to launch in New Zealand in September.

Full details and pricing of New Zealand's A6 allroad range are expected to be announced in late 2026.

A niche model with Kiwi history

The A6 allroad has appeared intermittently in New Zealand over the past two decades, offering buyers an alternative to conventional SUVs with its raised ride height, quattro all-wheel drive system, and wagon practicality.

The most recent generation was available locally until the 2022, offered primarily with Audi’s turbo-diesel V6 powertrain before quietly disappearing from the lineup as wagon sales continued to decline.

Its return would come as the segment has shrunk significantly, with rivals such as the Volvo V90 Cross Country and Mercedes-Benz E-Class All-Terrain no longer widely available in many markets.
