Forthing has confirmed pricing, specifications, and dealer coverage for its first New Zealand models, with the Taikon mid-size SUV range now on sale in both hybrid and electric forms.

Part of Dongfeng Liuzhou Motor, Forthing is entering the local market with a focus on value, long driving range, and high equipment levels as it looks to establish a foothold in the medium SUV segment, New Zealand's largest and most competitive new car market.

At launch, the brand will offer a single model in two grades, with buyers able to choose between a ‘Super Hybrid’ range extender drivetrain and a fully electric powertrain.

The range opens at $39,990 plus on-road costs for the Taikon Super Hybrid Luxury, rising to $44,990 for the Super Hybrid Exclusive. Electric variants start from $42,990 for the Taikon EV Luxury and extend to $47,990 for the flagship EV Exclusive.

Forthing New Zealand general sales manager Todd Groves said the brand is targeting buyers seeking strong value without sacrificing technology or ownership peace of mind.

“With pricing now confirmed, the Forthing Taikon range represents one of the strongest value propositions in the medium SUV segment,” said Mr Groves.

On paper, the hybrid Taikon stands out with a claimed 183km WLTP electric-only driving range from its 31.98kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery – significantly higher than most plug-in hybrids currently on sale – alongside a combined driving range of more than 1000km.

Both EV variants use a 64.4kWh LFP battery and offer a WLTP range of between 350km and 400km. The battery supports DC fast-charging at up to 150kW, allowing a 30-80 per cent recharge in under 21 minutes.

Hybrid and electric models are identical in size and appearance, with EV versions distinguished only by an ‘EV’ badge on the tailgate. Measuring 4600mm long, 1860mm wide, and 1680mm tall, the Taikon is similar in size to the Toyota RAV4.

All variants come with a lengthy list of standard equipment. Luxury models feature 19-inch wheels, LED headlights, power-adjustable seats with a driver massage function, six airbags, adaptive cruise control and a full safety suite.

Exclusive models add a panoramic opening glass roof, surround-view camera, power tailgate, and a 50W wireless phone charger. All variants are rated to tow up to 1500kg braked.

The range is backed by a seven-year, 200,000km vehicle warranty, an eight-year, 200,000km battery warranty, and seven years of roadside assistance.

The Taikon has achieved a five-star VSSR safety rating in New Zealand, though independent ANCAP testing has yet to be completed. The initial models do not include driver monitoring systems required for a five-star ANCAP rating, however these features are expected to be added to New Zealand vehicles within the next six months.

Forthing has confirmed an initial dealer network covering Auckland (central), Hamilton, Wellington, and Christchurch, with further locations planned for Auckland’s North Shore, West Auckland, Tauranga, and Dunedin.

Groves said the Taikon offers Kiwi buyers advanced technology, long-range hybrid capability, and a competitive warranty package, with more new models due before the end of the year.

“As we establish the brand in New Zealand, we’re also preparing to introduce additional new models over the next two years, giving customers more choice across multiple segments,” he said.

The Forthing Taikon is on sale from today, with vehicles now available for test drives and immediate delivery.
