Honda adds new Hybrid RS model to HR-V line-up

Honda's cheapest SUV gains racy new RS flagship amid range reshuffle.

Honda New Zealand has announced a new addition to its HR-V line-up, in the form of the new Hybrid RS flagship grade.

In line with the other RS in the Honda range — the CR-V RS — the new trim does not include any additional performance. Instead, it is a largely aesthetic package that gives the HR-V a more sporty stance.

Along with adding the new trim, Honda New Zealand has also adjusted the naming conventions of the balance of the HR-V range. The HR-V Sport has been renamed the Hybrid LX, whilst the HR-V L entry-level grade remains unchanged.

The adds variant-specific RS branding, gloss black exterior trim, an RS grille, and a racier interior underlined by red highlights and red contrast stitching.

The new Hybrid LX, meanwhile, when compared with the L, adds a hands free power tailgate with walk-away close, two-tone alloy wheels, and black faux leather upholstery with fabric appointments.

The revised range is now priced from $43,500 plus on-road costs, marking a slight discount in price over the model’s prior pricing. The Hybrid LX is priced at $45,800, and the flagship RS is $47,900.

The HR-V’s powertrain is unchanged, consisting of a 1.5-litre 4-cylinder petrol hybrid with a 1.1kWh battery pack, producing 96kW of power and 253Nm of torque. Honda claims a combined fuel economy figure of 5.2L/100km.

“The Honda HR-V continues to be an important model in our SUV line-up, offering customers a unique combination of hybrid efficiency, smart packaging and premium design,” said Honda New Zealand managing director Carolyn McMahon.

“The addition of the new HR-V Hybrid RS gives customers an exciting new flagship option with a sportier personality and distinctive styling, while retaining the practicality, versatility and efficiency that have made the HR-V such a popular choice.”

The changes are the latest in a series of adjustments Honda has made to its SUV range, with both the ZR-V and CR-V gaining mild updates of their own earlier this year.
