Hyundai Ioniq 6 N launches in Australia, under consideration for NZ

The Hyundai Ioniq 6 N has landed in Australia, and there's a possibility the performance EV sedan could make it to NZ as well.

The high-performance electric sedan segment is heating up across the Tasman, with Hyundai launching its latest N performance EV in Australia, although its arrival in New Zealand remains uncertain.

While the standard Hyundai Ioniq 6 is no longer available in New Zealand, having been quietly removed from local sale in 2024 amid slower demand for electric sedans compared to SUVs, the new Hyundai Ioniq 6 N has just gone on sale in Australia, priced from A$115,000 (~NZ$140,400).

Hyundai New Zealand says it is still weighing up whether the performance-focused N variant could return to Kiwi showrooms.

“Ioniq 6 N is still under consideration for New Zealand,” a Hyundai New Zealand spokesperson told CarExpert NZ. “A decision will be made in the near future.”

The Ioniq 6 N is underpinned by the same E-GMP platform as the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N SUV, which is priced from $149,990 in New Zealand. Hyundai says development of the sedan was guided by N division’s three-pillar philosophy of ‘Corner Rascal, Racetrack Capability, Everyday Sportscar’, adapted for a lower, more aerodynamic body.

Power comes from a dual-motor, all-wheel drive system producing up to 478kW and 770Nm when its N Grin Boost function is activated. Hyundai claims a 0-100km/h sprint time of 3.2 seconds.

An 84kWh battery delivers a WLTP-rated driving range of up to 487km, with support for both 400V and 800V charging architectures. Under ideal conditions, Hyundai says the battery can be charged from 10 to 80 per cent in as little as 18 minutes.

Key performance upgrades include electronically controlled suspension with stroke-sensing dampers, an electronic limited-slip differential, N-specific Pirelli P Zero tyres and large 400mm front brake discs. Software features such as N e-Shift, drift optimisation modes and track telemetry are also included to enhance driver engagement.

While the standard Ioniq 6 struggled to gain traction in New Zealand’s EV market, where SUVs continue to dominate sales, the introduction of a halo performance model could help reposition the nameplate among enthusiast buyers.

If approved for local sale, the Ioniq 6 N would likely remain a niche offering rather than a high-volume model, following a similar role to the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N in the brand’s local line-up.

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 is currently the only full electric model the Korean carmaker offers in New Zealand.
