New Zealand’s most popular car is set to be overhauled this year. The Toyota RAV4, fresh from dethroning the Ford Ranger in the local registration charts, is gaining a new sixth generation in the coming months, and with that comes new grades and new pricing.
The new RAV4 will be available with two different powertrains and either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, across six different trim levels.
“With the popularity of RAV4 we have expanded the lineup even further so it has basically become a brand of its own with a grade for every Kiwi driver, from our core everyday customers to adventurous types and driving enthusiasts,” said Toyota New Zealand chief strategic officer Andrew Davis.
The popular nameplate will once again be available with a conventional hybrid powertrain, based around a 2.5-litre petrol 4-cylinder engine producing 143kW of power. It will be offered in two FWD trims only; GX and GXL. These models kick off the line-up, and are priced at $49,990 and $52,990 including on-road costs.
Both the GX and GXL Hybrid will also be sold in AWD, at a $3000 premium over their FWD counterparts.

The RAV4 Hybrid range is led by the AWD Adventure and Limited, with the pair priced from $60,990 and $63,990 including on-road costs. These two specs will only be offered in traditional hybrid trim.
Whilst Toyota New Zealand long flirted with the idea, it was never able to formally bring in the plug-in hybrid variant of the previous generation RAV4. But, that ends with the arrival of the sixth-gen as the brand’s PHEV powertrain enters the range.
The 2.5-litre PHEV has two tiers. The entry-level FWD grade produces 201kW of power, whilst the balance of the line-up — which are all AWD — gets a more powerful 227kW output. The PHEV powertrain adds dual electric motors and a 22.7kWh battery. Toyota has not released a formal range figure for the model, but overseas reports suggest a competitive 100km is possible.
The entry-level FWD GXL PHEV is priced at $57,990, a $5000 premium over the equivalent FWD GXL Hybrid. The PHEV line-up is then led by two exclusive trims; the $61,990 XSE and the priciest model in the RAV4 line-up — the $66,990 GR Sport.

As with other GR Sport variants in Toyota’s range, the RAV4 GR Sport adds all manner of aesthetic GR touches. These include red brake calipers, sports pedals and seats and plenty of GR branding inside and out, plus paddle shifters and Brin Naub microsuede upholstery.
“The RAV4 PHEV adds a new dimension and is built for the Kiwi way of life and the access to charging infrastructure that we have here in NZ. It’s pure EV capability makes everyday trips smooth and quiet, while longer journeys are worry-free thanks to its ability to switch to hybrid mode where it uses both the Electric and Petrol powertrains,” Davis added.
“You’ll enjoy the convenience of electric driving with the added confidence of fuel efficiency and lower emissions when you need to go further.”
