SPONSORED: The MG MGU9 arrives as one of the boldest new contenders in New Zealand’s fiercely competitive ute market, a space traditionally dominated by rugged ladder‑frame veterans. MG takes a different path, delivering a unibody ute that blends 4x4 toughness with SUV‑like refinement, clearly aimed at upscale tradies and adventurous families who want comfort, technology, and capability in equal measure. The result is a large, somewhat imposing dual‑cab that prioritises space, practicality, and surprising sophistication.

Stylistically, the MGU9 makes a statement from the moment you see it. And you will see it. Its massive front grille and broad, slab‑sided profile exaggerate its already considerable size, giving it a virtually unmissable presence on the road. In fact, its sheer width and height make traditional rivals look modest in comparison. Sure, its visual dominance needs a little more care in tight spaces, but a crystal-clear 360-degree camera and multiple sensors are always at hand.
Size aside, for a ute trying to win over both image‑conscious tradies and active families, the MGU9 certainly looks the part with muscular proportions and trims that scale from functional to premium across the Explore, Explore X, and Explore Pro variants.

Inside, the cabin is expectedly spacious but maybe even moreso, it’s wide, airy, and reminiscent of American‑market trucks thanks to the large centre console and generous distance to the door cards. The seating is a highlight, even the standard seats offer comfort and good support, while the top-spec Explore Pro adds heat and ventilation for the front seats, the rear side seats are also heated and the driver gets a massage function.
When you add in premium, yet durable trim, top-notch NVH and superior ride quality (thanks in-part to the multilink suspension), you really do get SUV‑level luxury. This positions the ute squarely toward those who expect refinement during long commutes or weekend road trips away.

The Smart Hatch, MGU9’s unique electronic retractable rear panel (a $6,190 option for the Explore Pro variant) adds impressive versatility by allowing long items to pass from the tub into the cabin, extending the tub capacity from 1,200L to 1,600L and accommodating loads up to 2.4m. Paired with MultiFold seats that fold fully flat, the rear cabin transforms into a highly flexible cargo zone, making it ideal for DIY projects, all manner of family gear, or bulky worksite materials.
As expected for a more commercially-utilised vehicle, technology in the MGU9 does lean toward practical rather than cutting-edge, but in saying that, it’s well executed. MG’s 12.3‑inch infotainment system is responsive, with intuitive menus and straightforward graphics. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, as is wireless phone charging on higher grades. The Explore Pro enhances the experience with a JBL premium audio system and a panoramic sunroof, offering family‑SUV ambience that’s uncommon in the segment and quite the surprise.

The 360‑degree camera system is a standout, essential for navigating such a large vehicle and its Off-road tech includes Off‑Road Expert Mode, a transparent chassis view, crawl control, and a wading sensor, giving drivers advanced oversight on difficult terrain.
Power comes from a refined 2.5‑litre turbo‑diesel four-cylinder delivering 520Nm, paired with a smooth and consistent automatic transmission. The engine’s calm, unaggressive character suits the ute’s size, and it confidently supports the 3,500kg braked towing capacity. Ride comfort is enhanced by MG’s suspension tuning, making it more polished than most ladder‑frame rivals while still retaining a robust, work-focused feel.

Despite its unibody design (usually aimed at those who prioritise comfort) the MGU9 boasts serious off‑road hardware including front, centre, and rear locking differentials and a very low low‑range setting. The capability exceeds what many likely buyers will need, but it provides undeniable bragging rights and genuine performance when required.
Fuel consumption of around 11.5L/100km and an 80L tank give it an approximate range of 700km, which is more than competitive for the segment.

The MG MGU9 is a bold new ute from MG, clearly designed to attract upscale tradespeople and families wanting SUV comfort blended with proper 4x4 utility. It stands out for its cavernous interior, refined ride, impressive off‑road feature list, and segment‑unique touches like the electric folding tri‑step tailgate (Explore Pro) and Smart Hatch mid‑gate system.
For buyers prioritising refinement, space, modern tech, and standout presence, the MGU9 delivers an unexpected and appealing mix of attributes. It may not fit traditional ute moulds, but that may be exactly the point.
