2026 CarExpert Choice Awards: Best EV Small SUV

Small electric SUVs are fast becoming the sweet spot for Kiwi buyers looking to make the switch to battery power. Here are what we think are the best options on sale today.

Small electric SUVs combine the elevated seating position and everyday practicality of an SUV with the smooth, quiet performance and low running costs that make electric vehicles so appealing. Compact enough for city streets but capable of tackling longer weekend trips, they're an increasingly attractive option for a wide range of New Zealand drivers.

Our Best EV Small SUV category recognises the models that best balance driving range, charging performance, technology, practicality and overall value.

Judged by CarExpert's automotive journalists and grounded in real-world testing, this award reflects CarExpert's role as a trusted source of practical, independent car advice, giving Kiwi buyers a clear guide to the vehicles most worth considering.

    Winner: BMW iX1

Taking out the 2026 CarExpert Choice Award for Best EV Small SUV is the BMW iX1.

Not only that, but its combustion-powered X1 sibling also took out the award for best small luxury SUV.

Owing to its luxury nameplate, the iX1 isn't the most affordable small electric SUV in New Zealand and even its entry-level variant is more expensive than the flagships of the Kia EV3 and MG S5 EV lineups.

However, we chose the iX1 because of how adeptly BMW has applied its formula for success to its smallest electric SUV.

It's enjoyable to drive as a BMW should be, while still proving refined and comfortable.

The technology is top-notch, and the iX1 has an interior befitting its price point.

Perhaps one of the iX1's biggest strong suits is just how little it alienates. Other than its Hans Zimmer-developed soundtrack and the immediate off-the-line thrust of its electric powertrain, it'll feel very familiar for someone stepping out of any other BMW.

And when BMW makes such excellent cars, that's definitely a plus.

For buyers wanting a premium electric SUV without stepping into a larger vehicle, the iX1 leads the way.

    Finalist: Leapmotor B10

Joining the shortlist as a finalist is the Leapmotor B10.

The B10 proves that affordable EVs no longer need to feel like a compromise. It offers generous interior space, an extensive list of standard equipment and confident on-road performance, delivering impressive value while remaining practical enough for everyday family life.

    Finalist: Kia EV3

Also earning finalist honours is the Kia EV3.

The EV3 packages Kia's latest electric vehicle technology into a compact SUV that's easy to live with. Competitive driving range, a modern, tech-focused cabin and a comprehensive seven-year warranty give buyers added confidence, making it one of the most compelling mainstream electric SUVs on sale.
