BYD increases prices across New Zealand lineup, Atto 1 loses cheapest EV crown

BYD has increased prices across its New Zealand lineup by between $1000 and $2000, marking the brand's first price rise in three years.

BYD has increased prices across its New Zealand lineup for the first time in three years, citing rising operating costs as demand for its vehicles continues to outstrip supply.

Recommended retail prices for the brand's entire passenger cars and SUVs have risen by $1000, while every variant of the BYD Shark 6 plug-in hybrid ute has increased by $2000.

The increase means the entry-level Atto 1 , the brand's best-selling EV in New Zealand, now starts above the $30,000 mark, handing the title of New Zealand's cheapest new electric vehicle to the Dongfeng Box.

BYD Auto New Zealand general manager Warren Willmot said the company had resisted increasing prices for three years despite mounting cost pressures.

"This is our first price increase since 2023," said Mr Willmot.

"Shipping costs, local logistics, exchange rates and cost of living increases for our staff have all been factored in."

The price rise comes as the Chinese brand enjoys record sales growth in New Zealand.

According to Motor Industry Association registration data, BYD delivered 2079 passenger vehicles between January and May 2026, up 277 per cent on the same period last year. That made it the country's fifth best-selling passenger vehicle brand, ahead of Suzuki, Mazda, and Ford.

It has also become New Zealand's best-selling electric vehicle brand in 2026, registering 1253 battery-electric vehicles through May, while also leading the plug-in hybrid market with 826 registrations.

The BYD BYD Atto 1Atto 2, and Atto 3 have driven much of the brand's EV success, while the  BYD Sealion 5 is currently New Zealand's best-selling plug-in hybrid passenger vehicle.

Meanwhile, the BYD Shark 6 has helped propel the company into the country's top five commercial vehicle brands, with 638 registrations through May. The result comes as the Shark 6 Performance launched in New Zealand, with a more powerful 2.0-litre turbocharged engine and increased towing capacity, now rated at 3.5-tonne.

Strong demand has also created supply challenges.

Last month, BYD warned some customers would face delivery delays after demand exceeded forecasts and all available in-country stock and incoming shipments had been allocated.

However, the importer has since secured additional supply, with around 1250 vehicles due to arrive across three shipments during July, followed by further allocations in August.

"We appreciate the patience and understanding shown during this time and are pleased to provide a positive update," Mr Willmot said.

"As a result, we expect to fulfil all current customer orders by the end of August. Looking ahead, these increased supply volumes will substantially reduce wait times for new orders."

BYD has also been expanding its retail footprint in New Zealand, recently announcing six new dealerships that will increase its nationwide network to 19 locations.
