BYD New Zealand have confirmed it will bolster its popular Shark 6 lineup with a new high-output model.
The Shark 6 Performance will be priced at $76,990 plus on road costs, positioning it above the Shark 6 Premium, which remains available from $69,990 plus on road costs.
BYD say the more powerful and higher-capacity plug-in hybrid (PHEV) Shark 6 Performance ute has been designed specifically for tougher Kiwi working conditions.

Building on the existing Shark 6 platform, the Performance model delivers increased outputs of 350kW and 700Nm – up 30kW and 50Nm respectively over the Shark 6 Premium - thanks to a new 2.0-litre turbocharged engine.
BYD says the new model is a direct result of feedback from New Zealand customers seeking more capability for rural, commercial and recreational use.
Towing capacity has also increased to 3,500kg, placing the Shark 6 Performance on par with other electrified utes in its class, including the GWM Cannon Alpha PHEV and Ford Ranger Hybrid. Due to the weight of the PHEV, a New Zealand Class Two licence would be required when towing loads over 2,500kg.
BYD says the model has been tuned for farm tracks, forestry roads, beaches and construction sites, while still retaining the efficiency benefits of its electrified drivetrain.

First customer deliveries are scheduled to begin in May, with timing aligned to the dairy sector cashflow cycle, including the Fonterra payout season.
BYD New Zealand general manager Warren Willmot said the updates reflect direct input from local customers.
“Kiwis asked for more towing, more power and tougher off-road performance, and that is exactly what the Shark 6 Performance delivers,” said Willmot.
“This vehicle is built for how New Zealanders actually work and live.”
