Mitsubishi adds new model to Triton line-up, confirms updates

Mitsubishi New Zealand has added a new variant to its Triton ute line-up, giving a rugged bump to the nameplate’s most affordable trim level.

The Triton GLX-Sport slots in as the brand’s current most affordable 4-wheel drive double-cab wellside variant, undercutting the GLX 4WD it’s based on whilst adding several new features.

Priced at $49,990 plus on-road costs, the GLX-Sport is largely identical to the standard GLX, and also comes with some of the same spec omissions — including its use of halogen headlights, lack of fog lamps, and a traditional key and ignition barrel. 

Its most obvious additions are the additional sports bar on the bed, tinted rear windows, and black 18-inch wheels. It’s the only model in the Triton line-up to come with the former. The GLX Sport also comes with Mitsubishi’s softer leaf-spring suspension set-up from the GLXR.

Inside, you get silver contrast seat stitching in the upholstery, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, carpet flooring, and a 6-speaker sound system (up from the GLX’s 4-speaker set-up). 

The GLX-Sport is only offered in 4-wheel drive dual-cab wellside trim, with no 2-wheel drive versions or cab-chassis models available. 

The new variant’s timing aligns with the arrival of an update to the wider Triton line-up. A Mitsubishi New Zealand representative confirmed to CarExpert NZ that the local Triton range misses out on some of the updates the nameplate has received in Australia. 

The biggest change is to the Triton’s damping. All models get revised front spring rates and shock absorber valving to improve the model’s ride quality and handling. But, our range misses out on the Yamaha performance dampers fitted to flagship Triton models in Australia.

New Zealand’s Triton models also do not come with Mitsubishi Connect — an app-based suite of remote controls for features like air conditioning and central locking, similar to apps like FordPass.
